Setting up the "MOOD" for the scene:
In video production, good camera handling is only part of the job. The set is a tremendously important element when it comes to cinematography and giving the viewer a certain feeling to help accomplish the message of the film. (And yes, most films have an underlying message!)
The following information discusses the importance of properly setting up a scene using lighting and color choices in the background to make the success of a film achievable.
Lighting
Light is interesting because it can take on many different properties, can emit lots of different colors ("temperatures"), and can be used to influence emotion and set mood. Light is very powerful. The true definition of lighting is the placement and control of shadows. There are thousands of different ways to use light when you’re thinking about your production, and you really do need to sit down and think about what reaction you want your viewer to have.
Types of Lighting:
Dramatic Lighting
Dramtic Lighting can focus on an individual while keeping the rest of the stage dark. It is used especially in "spooky" scenes and horror/dramatic films.

In all of the images above, notice the contrast (difference between the lights and darks). There are lots of shadows and wherever the light is, it is very bright compared to the shadows.
Soft/Romantic Lighting
Romantic or Soft Lighting is typically dim and creates shadows with soft edges. The contrast is not as high as found in dramatic lighting techniques. It gives a softer, more romantic mood to the audience.
